This module contains more in depth information about birth physiology and labor support. We request that you make a personal assessment of your general knowledge base regarding pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. If you are highly experienced in this area, then you may choose to just skim this module. If you are rusty, we suggest you refresh yourself with this material. If you are brand new to the field, please dive into this content and build a foundation of knowledge. While we believe that the mentoring skills you'll gain from this course are the keys to being an impactful Birthing from Within Birth Doula and Childbirth Educator, it is also critical that you have an understanding of the physiology of pregnancy, birth, and postpartum.

This module contains reading, resources, and Home Practices designed to help you build or strengthen your knowledge base — to help you fill your fact basket!

As you already know, Birthing from Within finds that modern knowing — facts and data — is not, by itself, enough to navigate the intense initiatory experience of birth. It goes without saying, however, that facts and data can be enormously helpful at various points along the way. You don't need to be a medical expert or have encyclopedic knowledge of anything, but you do need a solid basic understanding of perinatal physiology and care practices, as well as the ability to locate and interpret more detailed information and research when necessary. In this course, we will begin to build the foundations of this knowledge with some information about reproductive anatomy, fetal development, and birth physiology.

Note: Home Practices are intended for your own growth and learning and do not need to be submitted for certification.
