Many expecting parents spend a lot of time thinking about birth…but the postpartum period holds just as many unknowns and challenges.
After making their way to the center of the labyrinth of birth, where they will finally meet their babies, new parents must make their way back out again, through the disorienting twists and turns of the postpartum experience, finding their way into their new identities and relationships.
How can we, as birth workers, prepare parents prenatally for this part of their journeys? This two-session course will offer skills and processes that birth workers can use to support pregnant parents’ preparation for the postpartum experience.
The postpartum period is such a complex and tender time – gain the skills needed to help your clients shine light upon the physical and emotional journey back to the self.
In this course you will learn:
The framework of the heroic journey and how it helps us navigate the postpartum experience.
Ways to help parents assess – and adjust – their expectations for postpartum healing and life with a newborn.
How to talk to parents about the unknowns that lie ahead while also making practical plans where possible.
How to bring self-compassion into the postpartum journey.
The emotional stages that parents may pass through as they look back on their birth experience and forward to their new lives with their babies.
Ideas for how to celebrate and honor this time as a rite of passage.
